Why the Domains Aliens.gov and Alien.gov Might Have Been Registered by the U.S. Government (I Promise It Relates to Web Design!)

Well, well, well—if it isn’t two of my favorite topics crossing paths: web design and UFO stories.
Sadly, I’m not a secret UAP insider, and I actually have no idea what the intention was behind the U.S. government allegedly registering aliens.gov and alien.gov in March of 2026. While I’m hopeful it’s because the White House is preparing to use its shiny new domain to announce that a group of inter-dimensional alien friends are here to save us all, unfortunately, today we’re here to talk about domains. Specifically, why they might have registered two very similar domain names as it relates to web design and redirects.
Why would someone buy multiple variations of the same domain name?
You’ve probably had a similar scenario to this happen to you in the past—you’re trying to visit a website, let’s use squarespace.com for our example—but you accidentally make a typo. Some of you might end up at sparespace.com while looking for a website, only to be confused when you’re suddenly viewing storage units in Florida. Others might have verbally misheard the company name, typed in scarespace.com, and ended up on GoDaddy asking you to buy the URL for three grand. Or in the best case scenario, you could have typed squaresspace.com with two “s”s instead of one, and, by golly, it still worked! Your search bar redirected you to squarespace.com! So was this the internet intuitively reading your intentions and taking you to the correct website? Nope—this was set up intentionally by Squarespace themselves.
So, how does the wrong URL get you to the right place?
In the example above, Squarespace would have registered multiple domain names to try and catch as much traffic as possible and prevent any lost business. You want your website to be easy to find and having a few URLs can prevent you from losing customers who get lost after making a simple typo. You’ll find often times that larger companies with larger budgets will register multiple domain names that sound similar or could be easily confused in order to help users find them. If you try going to squarespace.co or squarespace.org, you’ll see that same redirect correct you to squarespace.com. Squarespace was thinking ahead to help both customers find them and to help prevent fraud from bad actors on the internet who want to trick you into visiting their unrelated site by using a similar domain name.
So why did the government register both aliens.gov and alien.gov?
Believe me, I wish I knew the actual answer to this. While the timing of this happening after a directive to disclose UFO information, mixed with signals from government officials, points to this being UAP-related, we can only speculate what the domains will be used for. Regardless of what the content will be, the government most likely registered both aliens.gov and alien.gov so they’d have the option of setting up a redirect—meaning no matter which one you type in, you’ll end up in the correct place.
Should I purchase a bunch of domain variations for my own business?
Not necessarily. You definitely can if you want to, but if you’re just starting out in business or your business name isn’t easily confused or misspelled, this isn’t a high priority. It could be a good idea to keep an old URL after you change your business name, or to purchase both right off the bat if you foresee people misspelling it (like Fiverr versus Fiver). There’s no harm in owning multiple domains—just know you’ll be paying for all of them. If you can afford it and if you think you might want a similar-sounding domain one day, there’s no harm in buying it now for $10 before it goes on sale for thousands.
